Greenline vs Robo-Advisors

A robo-advisor manages your money. Greenline helps you understand it.

Updated Mar 29, 2026·

Robo-advisors like Wealthsimple Invest, Questwealth, and CI Direct Investing have made it easy for Canadians to start investing. You answer a few questions, deposit money, and they handle the rest: picking ETFs, rebalancing, and reinvesting dividends.

Greenline does none of that. It doesn’t manage your money, pick investments, or make trades. These are fundamentally different tools that serve different purposes.

What robo-advisors do well

Robo-advisors solve a real problem: most people don’t want to pick their own investments. They want to invest their money and have someone (or something) handle the details.

A good robo-advisor gives you a diversified portfolio matched to your risk tolerance, automatic rebalancing when things drift, dividend reinvestment, and tax-loss harvesting in some cases. You don’t need to learn about ETFs, asset allocation, or when to rebalance.

For people who want a hands-off approach, robo-advisors are a great option. They’re far better than leaving money in a savings account or paying high fees for actively managed mutual funds.

Where the gap shows up

The challenge with robo-advisors is visibility. They manage your money, but they don’t always help you understand it.

Limited view. A robo-advisor shows you what’s inside their platform. If you have accounts elsewhere (a group RRSP through work, an old RRSP at your bank, a self-directed TFSA), the robo-advisor can’t show you the full picture.

Simplified reporting. Robo-advisors tend to show you a simple performance number and a pie chart. That’s fine for a quick check, but it doesn’t tell you much about your real allocation across all accounts, what you’re paying in total fees, or how your full net worth is trending.

No cross-platform context. If you use Wealthsimple Invest for your RRSP and have a self-directed TFSA at Questrade, neither platform can show you both. You end up logging into two apps and trying to piece together the bigger picture in your head.

Black box feeling. Some investors start with a robo-advisor but gradually want to understand more about what they own. The robo-advisor manages a portfolio of ETFs on your behalf, but it doesn’t always make it easy to see exactly what’s inside those ETFs or how your overall exposure breaks down.

How Greenline fills the gap

Greenline sits alongside your robo-advisor (and your other accounts) to give you the full picture.

  • Combine everything in one view. Your robo-advisor account, your self-directed accounts, your group RRSP, all in one dashboard.
  • See your real allocation. Not just the pie chart from one platform, but your actual exposure across regions, sectors, and asset classes, including what’s inside your ETFs.
  • Understand your fees. See what you’re paying across all your investments, not just the robo-advisor’s management fee.
  • Track your net worth. Watch your total investment picture grow over time, not just one account.
  • Get a daily summary. One email each morning with everything, instead of checking multiple apps.

Greenline doesn’t replace your robo-advisor. Your robo-advisor keeps doing what it does: managing and rebalancing your portfolio. Greenline just helps you see the full picture and understand what you actually have.

Do you need both?

If all your investments are with one robo-advisor and you’re happy with their reporting, you might not need Greenline right now. Robo-advisors do a good job for people who want simplicity above all else.

But if any of these sound familiar, Greenline adds something your robo-advisor can’t provide on its own:

  • You have investment accounts at more than one institution
  • You want to see your total net worth across everything
  • You want to understand exactly what you own and how it’s allocated
  • You’ve started self-directing some accounts but still use a robo for others
  • You want more detailed reporting than your robo-advisor provides

Upload a statement from your robo-advisor and any other accounts, and you’ll have the complete picture in minutes.
